Where is the Costa Tropical?

It was the year 1928 when the Austrian hotelier residing in Almeria, Rodolfo Lussnigg, coined the name of Costa del Sol, in the hope that the tourists who visited the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville and the International Exhibition in Barcelona the following year, would come via Cadiz, Malaga, Granada, Almeria, Murcia, Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona and, if possible, spend the night in his hotel in Almeria.

Years later, hoteliers from Málaga also started to use the term Costa del Sol, and from the sixties onwards, the coast of the provinces of Málaga, Granada and Almería was included under this name, Motril being publicised as "the kilometre zero of the Costa del Sol".

25 years ago, the Costa de Granada and Costa de Almería decided to become independent and became known as the Costa Tropical and Costa de Almería respectively.

And after a quarter of a century of "independence", we wondered about people's knowledge or ignorance of the brand name Costa Tropical.

The virtual survey

To clarify the question, during February-March 2016 we conducted a web survey using Facebook ads, reaching more than 30,000 people, with different segmentations depending on the province or age.

From there we linked to forms generated with Typeform respecting the segmentation of the Facebook ads.

A weekend stay in a mobile home was raffled off among the participants, and it was not necessary to get the question right, just answer it.

Even taking into account that with Internet access it was possible to find the solution, and that the survey was done by CampingRed Castillo de Baños, the results were only fair for the Costa Tropical and Costa de Granada brands:

Street surveys

Not satisfied with the reliability of the survey due to the internet access of the respondent, we decided to go to the capital of Spain and do the surveys on the street.

So, in June 2016, camera and microphone in hand, we went to Madrid.

The results were surprising, as you can see.
